In Character Information
character name: Katsuya Jonouchi
Fandom: Yu-Gi-Oh (manga)
Timeline: Volume 21, Chapter 190, page 160-161. I am a bitch, I know.
character's age: 16ish - his series fails hard on making anything understandable in terms of time
powers, skills, pets and equipment: In terms of skills, Jonouchi seems to have the devil’s luck, but only when he’s really giving something his all. If he’s really, truly serious, things tend to seem to fall into place for him, but not without a few stumbles along the way. Even if he fails, he’s still more than likely managed to pull a few “luck of the draw” punches while doing it.
Physically speaking, Jonouchi’s not exactly scrawny. Having run with gangs and being one of their strongest has left its mark on him. While I know it’s an anime shot, this is pretty much what to expect with him. He carried Yugi’s almost 93lb deadweight bridal style out of a burning building from the second floor while suffering from smoke inhalation and burns, and has had his share of fights in which he had to rely on brute strength, speed, and agility. The kid’s not exactly weak.
Stamina-wise, he tends to keep going, pushing himself as far as he possibly can and then some despite the fact that he’s just your average human. He survived being struck down by an angry Ra’s lightning attack during the duel with Rishid, withstood Dark Malik’s attacks during a Shadow Game in which the body was unharmed but the mind was tortured, and remained standing after being attacked by Ra’s Phoenix form’s flames... though his body gave out not long after and he ultimately died from the attack.
What he’s got on him: his school uniform, his Duel Disc, and his deck.
Mist-augmented: He died in a Shadow Game, so taking him from one will treat things as though he were still in one. Like Yugi, those Monsters, Spells, and Traps are real... though things such as Monster Reborn will only work on Duel Monsters, since that’s what they were made for. Unfortunately for him, and unlike Yugi, Dark Marik’s rule is still (and will stay) in effect: the damage his monsters take is reflected back at his own body, and while not visible to others, it feels and looks real to him - what others see is the reaction. (Think taking the blood out of a series like Bleach where they’re beating the shit out of each other, but all it looks like they’re doing is reacting, not actually receiving damage.) Bypassing the Monster and going straight for him is possible as well, and injuries inflicted on Jonouchi himself are real, aka. he will bleed.
His deck isn’t exactly powerful like Yugi’s or Kaiba’s. The strongest monsters he has that he actually uses are Gearfried the Iron Knight and Jinzo. The Red Eyes Black Dragon, his signature card, is not in his possession since he hasn’t dueled Yugi to get it back.
canon history: Wiki... which, as of when I finished this, is missing some parts. SO! Here are summaries of the missing parts up to his canonpoint... which consists of volumes 9-10 and volumes 14-21 WHY THIS IS OVER HALF THE SERIES MISSING STUPID WIKI I SHOULD WRITE YOU MYSELF D:
personality: Jonouchi spent most of his childhood running with gangs, was pretty well feared by others, and was such that Hirutani almost made him his second in command, virtually equal to himself as gang leader. He was never the sort to beat on someone after it was obvious they couldn’t continue the fight, though. He had a habit of knocking them down and making sure they knew better than to try again instead of making sure they stayed down. In school, this amounted to him being one hell of a bully... until he made a mistake and picked on one Yugi Mutou.
It wasn’t fighting Yugi that was the problem: it was the Hall Monitor, Ushio, who tried to milk money from Yugi by playing “bodyguard” and forcing Yugi to have to pay him. You see, Jonouchi had never really had “friends” before, so when Ushio was kicking the shit out of him in front of Yugi and the boy intervened, saying that Jonouchi was his friend, it woke him up. From then on, Jonouchi became friends with Yugi, and that completely changed his world.
Now, it might seem pointless to say all of that since he’s no longer in a gang, but that backstory is what really started everything. In fact, the easiest way to begin to describe his personality is to kick things off with a warning label, so...
Doing anything to one of them will usually result in having a very angry ex-gang member to deal with, and he isn’t one to back down unless Yugi calls him off. This is a residual of the gang’s mentality in which the gang is family and if you’re cool with one, you’re cool with all, but if you go against one, you bring everybody down on your head. Perhaps this means the term “friend” should be defined a little clearer: any friend of Yugi’s is a friend of his, as the two of them tend to be something of a package deal, which means that if you befriend either Jonouchi or Yugi, you’ve got Jonouchi as a friend.
He isn't afraid to throw himself into harm's way in order to help one of those friends, and if he makes a promise, he'll keep to his word, even if he looks like a moron doing it. He may not be the brightest crayon in the box and asks a lot of questions/makes a lot of assumptions, but he's not exactly stupid... it just takes him longer to figure things out and he may need it spelled out in big letters before he catches on. He's more street smart than book smart, but his unwillingness to back down usually has his common sense going out the window.
Jonouchi is lively, a bit of a pervert, and prone to goofing off as well as running his mouth. He rarely misses a day of school but only does enough to barely squeak by in every class except P.E, which he aces. In terms of class rank, he’s all the way at the bottom, in the high 300s almost 400s, but not last. Because his father is an alcoholic with a gambling problem, Jonouchi knows the meaning and value of hard work. He’s technically the sole breadwinner in his house, working to keep a roof over their heads and food on the table. While it’s not allowed for a student to have a part time job, Jonouchi is the exception as he’s needed to support both himself and his father.
He's got a rather rude speech pattern in that he doesn't use honorifics and when talking to someone, he uses words that emphasize the point (ie: "teme" to those he doesn't like vs. "omae" to those he does)*. He also doesn’t swear much unless it’s something bad. Like, really bad. As in while reading through 13 volumes of manga, there were maybe 5 or 6 instances total and all of them came when he was really REALLY angry or frustrated. He tends to stick to tamer words and settle scores with his fists or his cards.
Jonouchi’s given name is Katsuya, but with the exception of his sister and mother, as well as those rare times when someone's mad enough at him, no one really uses it. It’s not that he doesn’t give his name if asked, but because well, nobody really calls him that. He’ll answer to both, though.
He's also very much afraid of ghosts, spirits, curses, spooks, zombies, the supernatural, and anything else that would be classified as creepy. Oh, and bugs. He doesn’t care for bugs, either.
* This is a pain in the butt to show in text, but sadly, it’s kind of a staple of the character. The manga has him using a lot of slang and words like “ain’t”, so his language will be coarser than someone like Ichigo’s, who’s not so much a street kid.
why do you feel this character would be appropriate to the setting? Let’s see.. in the total of 28 volumes of manga, Jonouchi has: through a messy divorce between his parents in which he and his sister were separated, been the sole breadwinner in his house, endured living with a verbally abusive and alcoholic father, run with street gangs, been beat up, been held hostage by an escaped convict with a gun, been mugged over tennis shoes, been bound, tazed and beaten by his former gang, nearly fallen from the roof of the Domino Museum, ran the risk of having a knife jammed down his throat in a fight, been poisoned, ran the risk of getting shot by Kaiba’s hired hitmen using real lasers in a game of laser tag, almost got his hand chopped off by a guillotine, killed the Chopman by incinerating him, was held at gunpoint-to-head, taken part in a rigged game show, beaten by his former gang (again) this time with yoyos, had glass shards thrown in his eyes, had his soul sucked into a miniature for a tabletop RPG, risked his life diving off of a moving ship to get Yugi’s cards back, won an assortment of duels, been beaten up by Bandit Keith’s men, dragged Yugi out of a burning building, been possessed, almost drowned, been pushed to the brink by a shadow game, aaaand died. The majority of this is all over the span of... maybe a year? It's practically normal to him.
And he’s very much afraid of ghosts, curses, the supernatural in general, and creepy things. It’d be pure torture!

[Voice]
Guess this is the afterlife, huh? ‘S funny... didn’t think the dead went to England. Maybe I shoulda paid more attention in class after all.
[Sigh.]
Man, this place is startin' to give me the creeps...
[There’s a long silence... and then the Forge shuts off with a clatter as it’s dropped onto a hard surface]
Third Person Sample: He remembered the fire and the pain, the heat of the flames wrapped around him, the excruciating feeling of being burned alive. He remembered -vaguely- drawing Gearfried.
That was where the memories stopped.
Mai. He hadn’t been able to save her like he’d sworn he would. It was up to Yugi now.
Yugi...
Jonouchi pushed himself up from where he lay face down on a mattress, a bed he didn’t recall being there moments ago. Wait... bed? Table. Closet. Carpet. Walls. Room. Where was he? Had he somehow managed to survive? Had he been able to summon Gearfried after all and beat Malik, but just didn’t remember it? Had he been burned to death? Was this someone's house or was this the afterlife?
His eyes darted around the room, finally settling on a window facing outward into a city that was like nothing he’d ever seen before. Was this... England? If this was England, then oh yes, he was definitely dead.
“Guess this is the afterlife, huh? ‘S funny... didn’t think the dead went to England. Maybe I shoulda paid more attention in class after all.”
He sighed and raised his left hand to rake it through his bangs, but stopped when he realized he was still wearing his Duel Disk, his deck still in place, Gearfried the Iron Knight wedged somehow into the seams of the metal which must’ve been what had kept it from falling off. The Duel Disk was something he certainly wasn’t going to be needing here. Not anymore.
“Man, this place is startin' to give me the creeps...”
Turning away from the window, his gaze came to rest on the little device on the nightstand. It took him a few tries to figure out how to get it to work, but when the messages of others began to appear on the screen, he immediately dropped it back onto the nightstand and backed away from it. What was that? Some sort of Diary of the Damned where the souls of the dead could converse with one another? The more he thought about it, the creepier the entire situation became.
Oh no, he was definitely not going to stay here. He was going to figure out how to get back to Domino even if it meant he had to haunt Honda! And speaking of his friend...
...Honda had better not think that just because he wasn't there, Shizuka was fair game! If he so much as laid a hand on his sister, Jonouchi'd make it his afterlife's goal to haunt him like there was no tomorrow.
Anything else?
